JRIA Publishes Recording Media Forecasts
Japan - November 16, 2007... The new annual forecast on recording media from the Japan Recording Media Industries Association offers some interesting insights into the worldwide market for recordable media formats and the part Japanese companies play in worldwide production. For example, the JRIA estimates worldwide CD-R production in 2007 at 7,800 million discs, of which Japanese producers accounted for 1,616 million, or about 21%. The worldwide total is 6% lower than in 2006, and will fall to 6,060 million units in 2010, according to Association projections. For DVD-Write Once media, the 2007 worldwide estimates are for 6,148 million discs, up 19% from 2006, with Japanese producers accounting for 2,385 million (38.8%). In 2010, the Association sees production reaching 7,393 million units, an increase of about 20% over 2007.
Coughlin Publishes Entertainment Storage Report
San Jose, CA - March 21, 2005... The new annual report on data storage and the entertainment market from Coughlin Associates shows strong growth in digital storage demand driven by higher resolution content creation and distribution as well as archiving and digital preservation. The 2005 Entertainment Content Creation and Digital Storage Report (price $1,500) analyzes requirements and trends in worldwide data storage for entertainment content acquisition; editing; archiving and digital preservation; as well as digital cinema, broadcast, satellite, cable, and VOD distribution.
Between 2004 and 2010 Coughlin expects a 900-fold increase in the required digital storage capacity shipments per year. Up to 1,600 Terabytes may be required for a complete digital movie production at 4K resolution.
In 2004 Coughlin estimates that 60% of the total storage media shipped for all the digital entertainment content segments was tape with 40% optical, 0.43% hard disk drives and a very small amount was flash memory. By 2010 tape media units should decrease to 40%, optical increase to 55% and hard disk drives increase to 4%.
Storage Market Shows Revenue Growth
Saturday, 04 September 2004... International Data Corp. (IDC), a leading research firm, published their report of the external storage market growth yesterday. The firm said the overall storage market grew by 5 percent from $4.77 billion to $5 billion this year.
Hewlett Packard (HP) led the market in second quarter, but noticed a decline in its overall revenue and market shares. The company's revenue and market shares, according to IDC's research, declined by 8.9 percent from $1.26 billion to $1.15 billion (revenue) and from 26.5 percent to 23 percent (market shares).
IBM came in second with its revenue increase by 6.2 percent from $957 million to $1.02 billion thus far. The company too noticed a gain in its market shares from 20.1 percent to 20.3 percent.
EMC Corp. experienced the largest overall year-to-year growth as the company's market shares climbed from 12.6 percent to 14.4 percent with its overall revenue growth from $602 million to $719 million, which shows a 19.5 percent revenue increase rate.
Sun Microsystems', however, was not as successful as others this year. The research showed a decline in Sun's market share as well as revenue areas. Sun Microsystems stayed ahead of Dell with $379 million in final revenue reports. IDC reported that Dell noticed the biggest year-to-year growth rate by 21.7 percent.
According to IDC, EMC is currently in the first place with market shares at 20.7 percent and revenue at $719 million. HP came in second with its market shares at 18.2 percent and revenue at $719 million. IBM came in third with $471 million (4.7 percent increase in revenue since last year), Sun and Hitachi fought for fourth place with Sun at $282 million and Hitachi at $281 million (increase of 4.7 percent for Hitachi) in revenue. The rest of the market holds the remaining of 31.4 percent market shares with $3.48 billion in final revenue.
